Week 1—February 16—Intro/Superpower Lesson
Plan
Intro (10
minutes)
- Teachers come in as “superheroes” (5 min)
- Act out a scenario that deals with Creative Writing
- Ex: “Someone has stolen all the books in the world! We need to recreate them so all creativity is not lost!” – (Then it’s up to the students to “save the day” and write!)
- Give the spirit/purpose of the class in a fun way through this scenario
- We bring in “magic pencils” for the class to use
- Who’s your favorite superhero? (5 min)
- Let students talk about their favorites, while we note important aspects of these characters (Costume? Enemy? Fantasy land?)
Group
Brainstorm (10-15 minutes)
- What does a superhero need?
- Students give ideas, and we write them on the board
We
want to guide them to:
- Superpower
- Archenemy
- Mission
Other
ideas we could supply:
- Origin (how did they get their power?)
- Outfit (and special aspects of the outfit)
- Weakness
- Sidekick
- Catch phrase
- Love interest
- Home
Emphasize
superpower, archenemy, and mission
Use those
three as jumping off points to write
Solo writing
(30 minutes)
Encourage
them to write:
- How did your superhero get their power?
- An encounter with their archenemy
- A time they saved the day
- What is their costume like?
- What is their home/fantasy land like?
Wrap-up (5 minutes)
Ask students
to read their stories
If many
students want to read, ask to list the three main emphases (superpower,
archenemy, mission).
